Altogether four deer species are found in Koshitappu Wildlife Reserve. They are spotted deer, Axis axis; Barking deer, Muntiacus muntjak; Hog deer, Hyelaphus porcinus and Samber deer, Rusa unicolor. Out of these four, the Sambar is larger one. The Samber is listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List since 2008. The deer species are mainly attacked by Stray dogs. Armed Police Force, Inruwa, Sunsari had taken this Samber here in Koshitappu Wildlife Reserve. And, after a month’s treatment at Wildlife Rescue Center situated at reserve’s head office, West Kushaha, Sunsari, the healthy Samber was rescued in the reserve’s forest in 2020.
